Monthly Meetings 2017

January 2017 – communicate with confidence

communicate

Julia Cawte from Communicate with Confidence is coming to speak to us in the New Year. She works with people who want to express themselves effectively with confidence, flair and conviction. This is aimed at anyone from business owners, to the President of Bath WI for example! Many of us may be required a give speeches or presentations as part of work or indeed in a social setting such as at a wedding. Although we are all talented in different ways, we may not be so confident or persuasive at delivering a message to a larger audience. As we all know, it’s important to pay attention not just to what you are saying but how you are saying it.

February 2017 – Shane Jordan

food-waste

Shane Jordan is a vegetarian chef and environmental practitioner from Bristol. He has recently released his highly anticipated book titled the Food Waste Philosophy. This book chronicles his success in cooking, his views on vegetarianism and discusses and debates the subject of food waste. He’s kindly agreed to come and speak to us in February about how to minimise food waste and promote sustainability outside the kitchen.

March 2017 – Hillier Garden Centre, Bath

The lovely Zoe Page, plant manager of Hiller’s Bath (record breaking number of gold medals at RHS Chelsea Flower Show), has kindly agreed to be this years Bath WI gardening expert speaker (sorry Kitty). She has kindly agreed to  speak to us about unusual plants for hanging baskets and garden containers and thus, is going to give us a demonstration of how such displays are done to the best effect.  I for one will be glued to her every move.  Moreover, she has promised to answer all those tantalising gardening mysteries we have around our own gardens.

April 2017 – Banes Carers’ Centre

‘If you look after someone, we are here for you’

The Carers’ Centre is a local charity supporting people who care for family and friends who need extra support day-to-day. This might be because they are elderly, have a physical disability or illness, a mental health problem or struggles with substance misuse.

If you are a carer, the Carers’ Centre is here for you. They can offer expert advice, breaks from caring, emotional support and understanding.

Sophie and David have kindly agreed to take some time out of their busy schedule to tell us about the sterling work that the centre does to support local carers

May 2017 – The Marmalade House

marmalade

I’m not quite sure of the format of this evening, but Vanessa Saye who owns The Marmalade House Business, specialises in interior design with colour and style. I’m hoping there might be an element of hands on, so watch this space!

June 2017 – Summer Fun & Games

croquet

We’ve decided to break with tradition this year, and instead of the annual garden party, we are going to have a fun evening ‘at home’ aka, St Mary’s Church Hall.  Fingers crossed for good weather.  It will be the format of bringing a plate to share, with lots of summer games to play.  If anyone has any garden games which they wouldn’t mind bringing on the evening, could you please let one of the committee members know.  Thus far, we have croquet, boules & quoits.  Has anyone got garden Jenga, Connect 4 or anything of a similar ilk that they would be prepared to share?

July 2017 – Mayor’s Walk

June, one of the gardening Gurus, kindly put me in touch with Alan, who has amayorsgreed to do a walk for us in July.  We will meet at the slightly earlier time of 19.00 outside the Abbey, by the pump rooms and NOT along the Grand Parade, as previously stated.  The walk will last for 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours.  We will go along Great Pultney St, into Sydney Gardens and then dip along the tow path, before heading back.  Alan will tell us about the history of the area and the local residents.  It would be lovely to give Alan an idea of numbers after May’s meeting so he can muster another walker if needed.  Please let a committee member know at the next meeting or before, if you feel you might like to attend.  We will probably round off the evening at a local hostelry!!

August 2017 – Summer Break
