Bath Buns were in action on Friday night in the third round of the Avon Federation darts tournament. It was a return to Keynsham and this time we were drawn against Stanton Drew. The team consisted of Rose, Paula, Gabrielle and Karen, with Jo providing the maths by chalking, and Helen providing the whooping as our supporter. We celebrated our early arrival with a sneaky G&T and a toast to the late Eric Bristow, a better way to limber up than throwing too many darts!
Game one started apace with steady scores from both sides. Before we could reach the dreaded double 1, Rose threw a spectacular double 2 and it was 1-0 to us. Round 2 saw Stanton Drew off the blocks fast with some excellent scores. They were within sight of a finish when captain Rose came forward with an excellent double to put us 2-0 up. It was such an exciting moment that Paula managed to stab herself with her own dart, drawing blood! A good moment to take a break for a drink and a calm down.
Game 3 and our top scores – Karen 93 but quickly eclipsed by Paula’s 99. Despite this, Stanton Drew threw well as a team and Ann finished the game for them – 2-1. So on to a tense game 4 when the pressure showed by some more random scores! And, as expected, we were down to both sides needing a double 1 with WI rules kicking in. Some lovely clusters of darts around the target before Paula threw a fabulous dart and the match was won.
A huge thank you to Jo and Helen, to the lovely ladies from Stanton Drew (who are celebrating their 100th year as a WI next year) and to the Keynsham British Legion who obligingly switch on all the lights around the board and trustingly access the cupboard situated beside it!
The darts team meet on the second Thursday of the month at the Pulteney Arms – everyone welcome for a drink, a chat and a few arrows!
